The secrets of the Costa Brava

What does this place have that all travelers fall in love with, both national and international? Why are the holiday homes so popular here, every year? Roses is located in the heart of a large natural reserve, formed by parks and a varied coastline where the waters of the Mediterranean are always of an intense turquoise colour. And it is this sea which is the main attraction of the Costa Brava. Due to its many beaches and coves, tourists find the relaxation they search for in a vacation.

The perfect family destination

  • Route through Cap de Norfeu: it’s a family walk through the Cabo de Creus Natural Park, of approximately an hour and a half. Ideal to do with children due to the low difficulty and because you can enjoy spectacular views together.
  • Throughout the summer – three days a week – the youngest of the family can be the the kings of the party in children’s shows with puppets, storytelling, circus, musical entertainment, family competitions … ideal to spend a great time with the children.
  • The boat with underwater vision is something that your children will love, plus they can learn new things. In the section of activities you can find the companies that provide this service and are recommended by Muchosol.
  • In July and August, we can find the Children’s Club located on Nova beach – at the height of Plaza de Catalunya – where special monitors create different activities and games for children.

Beaches

L’Almadrava Beach

It is one of the beaches protected by the wind of the Tramuntana, which makes it the most famous beach in Roses and has a length of only 5 kilometres with fine sand and crystal clear waters.

The nearby town has many services like parking, showers, restaurants and aquatic activities – all to make the beach easy accessible for everybody. Ideal for families!

La Punta Beach

Adjacent to the marina of Roses and the Rambla Riera Ginjolers, it is a beach of 550 metres with very fine sand and transparent and shallow waters. This beach is also ideal for families and to practise water sports.

It has numerous services, good restaurants and an area especially for water activities. In addition, it is very easy accessible.

Santa Margarita Beach

Here you’ll find shallow waters that go from the Salatar beach to the mouth of the residential marina of Santa Margarita.

It has many services, water activities for children and adults and 3 parkings, so you can easily reach the beach by car. This beach is suitable for all ages, that also has great nightlife.

Coves

Cala Montjoi

Beautiful cove of grainy sand and pebbles, also known for its famous restaurant El Bulli. It is located 7 kilometres from Roses, and it can be reached by a paved road, which makes it easily accessible. It has a length of 280 metres and is also ideal for scuba diving and kayaking.

Cala La Pelosa

It is the perfect cove for sailors. Located 15km from Roses and with a length of 90m. We find a fishermen’s barrack which is used as a shelter and a chiringuito with typical food of the area.

They have moorings and if you want they could serve you on the boat. Ideal to have a break and in the meanwhile enjoy the wonderful views. It can also be accessed by an unpaved road.

Cala Canadell

It is a virgin cove of 60 metres which is located at the foot of Cape Norfeu. It doesn’t have any services, not very easy accessible since you have to walk from the road to Ronda and you can not access it by car. However, it is perfect for the lovers of nature.

It is advisable to bring water shoes since there are only rocks in this part of the sea.

Natural Parks

Cap de Creus

Considered a unique place in the world, Cap de Creus is one of those spots that can not be missed in the guide of any traveller, who is going to spend a few days on the Costa Brava. This great Natural Park is formed by a perfect combination of steep cliffs bathed by the Mediterranean and its proximity to the Pyrenees.

Natural Park Aiguamolls de l’Empordà

Another protected area that you can not miss is the Natural Park of the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà. It is constituted by three zones: the ‘Estanys‘, with an important area of cane plantations, bulrushes and flooded meadows, the ‘Llaunes‘, with lagoons, meadows and dunes and, lastly, ‘Isla de Caramany‘, located in the centre of the Fluvià, and where a large number of birds breed. It is a magical place for hiking or cycling.

Medes Islands

The Medes Islands are a set of 7 small islands that we cannot miss to discover. The only way to reach them is by boat, it is a protected place that you cannot access by yourself. If you would like to discover this magical place, the best thing to do is an excursion by catamaran.

A great gastronomy

  • Buñuelos de l’Empordà: Buñuelos are typical food of Lent or Easter. Many usually have their own recipe and tradition, but of course, it is something you should try. They are very tasty since they are fried in abundant oil and emphasise on its ingredients such as cinnamon and anise.
  • Rocs de Montjoi: In a pastry shop in the centre of Roses where we can try this artisan delicacy which has been named after a cove where the pastry chef’s grandfather was born. This pastry is made with hazelnut, egg white, sugar and cocoa powder – delicious!
  • Magdalenes d’en Piupiu: In this same bakery we can try the candied orange muffins with pine nuts. The name is in honour of the baker’s son, who was called Piupiu.
  • Suquet de Peix de Roses: It is one of the most famous dishes of Roses. Many restaurants in this area prepare the dish with fresh fish, caught the same day. Traditionally it was prepared by fishermen boiling the fish with potatoes, although it has evolved a lot to this day and they added more Mediterranean products.
  • Anchoas de Roses:  salted anchovies is a very old method of conserving fish. Formerly, in the Citadel of Roses, there was a salting factory. Now we can explore its ruins.

Pets are welcome

Between Roses and Empuriabrava we will find La Rubina beach where dogs are very much welcome.

It is a 200m beach with fine sand and generally calm waves. Dogs do not have to be tied, so they can enjoy the area as well – in freedom. Also, as a novelty, we can find a restaurant that accepts dogs and has a canine menu!!

The menu is very varied and suitable for all diets, even for puppies. We can find the restaurant at the Castell Mar Camping on this beach. At Muchosol we are delighted with this initiative.
