The paradise beaches of Mauritius Island

Many people think you do not have to travel to the Indian Ocean for a few days to enjoy sun, sea and beach, but Mauritius Island has so much more! The country is incredibly beautiful! The beaches of Mauritius are not very wide, but there are miles of beaches along the coast. You can enjoy the lush vegetation and discover the underwater world while snorkelling.

A place you should definitely visit? That is undoubtedly “Deer Island“, an island on the east coast of Mauritius where you can find beautiful white beaches with clear blue waters. That is one of the most important reasons why so many tourists travel to Mauritius. Do you want to enjoy a sunset on the beach? The best place to watch it is on the Mont Choisy beach.

Moreover, Mauritius Island is the best destination for paddle surfing or sailing on catamaran. It will give you a beautiful view of the coast while you navigate the clear blue waters. Also, it is a nice place to snorkel and discover the beautiful underwater world. You will find many companies on the island who offer various excursions, so do not forget your snorkel because when you see the water you want to stay in it forever!

But Mauritius is much more than sun, sea, beach and relax

As we said, Mauritius has much more to offer than just paradise beaches. But what then? Well, first of all, it is the perfect destination for nature and hiking lovers because of the beautiful environment. For example, discover the most visited mountain “Le Morne Brabant“, a unique rock that rises more than half a mile above sea level and was named a Cultural Heritage. You can find this rock in the southwest of the island, and if you like some adventure, you can climb the mountain by yourself, although we would suggest doing it with a guide.

If you love nature, you’ll also want to visit this place: “Black River Gorges National Park“, a beautiful park where you’ll find miles of trails where you can hike while discovering the nature of the island.

Other places you should not miss are the spectacular craters such as the Grand Bassin or the Trou aux Cerfs. The Trou aux Cerfs has a diameter of 300 meters and a depth of 100 meters. Although the volcano is inactive right now, there is a chance that it will get active at any time. The Grand Bassin is wonderful, because it is covered by a lake resulting in a unique natural environment. The inhabitants of Mauritius Island believe that it is connected underground with the Ganges River and right here there is a time dedicated to several gods of the Hindu religion.

Absolutely one of the most spectacular natural places which will impress you: The Land of the Seven Colors in Charamel. This place has two main characteristics: a forest of lush vegetation and thousands of dunes formed by sand with different colours: yellow, violet, green, blue, brown, red… These colours are even more intense during the sunset. It will surprise you how the earth separates it through different layers of colours! Nearby you will find the Chamarel waterfall, the largest fall of the whole island with a height of almost 100 meters. Just imagine that scenery!!

Essential for every trip

Each country has typical products that you have to discover when you visit them, and for Mauritius there are two: sugar and rum. To learn everything about these products, we recommend you visit the Rhumerie de Chamarel. It is a distillery and one of the favourite activities of tourists, opened in 2008. You can visit the factory itself and discover how the process the liqueur works, as well as tasting some of the best rums. The most important ingredient is sugar, that is why you can also not miss to visit this place: “The Sugar Adventure”. This is a museum that reflects the importance of this product for Mauritius Island, in the oldest factory of the island, opened at the end of the eighteenth century.

If you want to discover more interesting places of the island, we recommend visiting the capital, Port Louis. The city was founded by the French in 1735 and is now a real melting pot of cultures inhabited by both Japanese and Africans, Europeans and, of course, Indians. Stroll along the Cauden Waterfront, discover the breathtaking views from Fort Adelaide or buy fresh products in the central market… just to name some of the activities this city has to offer. The most famous museums are Natural History and Blue Penny, the latter tells the whole history of the island and it is the perfect way to learn everything about this destination.
