The City of Arts and Sciences was designed by the valencian architect Santiago Calatrava. They began constructing these unique buildings in 1989 and the last building was finished in 2009. In total, the City of Arts and Sciences consist of 6 parts: L’Oceanogràfic, L’Hemisfèric, Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe, L’Umbracle, Agora and Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.

L’Oceanogràfic

L’Oceanogràfic is the biggest aquarium in Europe with a total of 500 different animal species and 40,000 animals. This is a must-see when you visit Valencia, and not only when you are travelling with children.

L’Hemisfèric

L’Hemisfèric, also called “the Eye” because of its shape, is the building surrounded by water where the latest video and audio technology for the IMAX 3D cinema is used. Generally documentaries are displayed which take about 45 minutes and are very interesting and educational. While watching the movies you are able to switch languages.

Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe

This is a Science museum for everyone! Their motto is: do NOT touch, do NOT feel and do NOT think. There are many exhibitions where you can discover the newest technologies and where you can experiment with.

L’Umbracle

L’Umbracle is a garden with palm trees, flowers and plants which is opening during the whole year, and an outdoor disco which is only opened in summer. As you can see in the pictures below, it will be an amazing place to visit. Escape the city and enjoy a quiet walk through this garden surrounded by the impressive white buildings of the City of Arts and Sciences.

Agora

The Agora building was finished in 2009, the last one. Normally it is not open for public but many events are held here such as exhibitions, congresses, concerts, or even the Valencia Fashion Week.

Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía

This building is used for, among others, opera performances, which it is also called “The Opera Building”. Palau des les Arts Reins Sofía is both outside and inside beautiful. The main hall is decorated with blue mosaic.
