What to do in Menorca for your long weekend

Day 1️⃣

In the morning

  • Monte Toro

This day is worth getting up early. Be prepared to have a little hike to the highest point of the island, located in the middle of the island (even though it is only 358 meters high!). Of course, you will have great views from the top. On a clear day, you can even see Mallorca. ?

Not only that, but you will also find the Santuario de la Virgen de Monte Toro and a beautiful Gothic church from the 17th century. That and the beautiful view makes it a must-see on the island. In the afternoon

  • Ciutadella

A walk, in this historic city, takes you through many interesting sites. Explore all the narrow alleys with stairs that pass through the city and you will see all historical highlights. This romantic port city features Gothic and Baroque architecture, making it feel like you’re walking through a film set.

What to do in Menorca? Visit the Catedral Santa Maria de Ciutadella, the Molí de Comte, the historic center, Plaza de la Esplanada, Castillo de San Nicolás, the port of Ciutadella. Then, spend an afternoon on a sunny terrace at the old port of Ciutadella which is a pleasure for every visitor. ?

A phenomenon that characterizes the port of Ciutadella is ” the Rissaga”. Under certain atmospheric conditions, the water level fluctuates up and down in the summer. However, the last time this phenomenon took place was in 2006 and it destroyed more than 25 boats. Since then, the port has been better protected in order to mitigate the fluctuations.

  • Sa Posta de Sol

Menorca is not only known for its paradise beaches. Watching the sunset is also one of the things to do in Menorca. What’s better than a sunset with a delicious snack and drink.

Sa Posta de Sol is a restaurant located on a cliff where you can enjoy a cocktail and the Mediterranean view. With quiet music going on as a background, this is a promise for a romantic evening overlooking the Mediterranean. Some people say it’s the most beautiful place to enjoy the sunset.

Day 2️⃣

In the morning

  • Torre d’en Galmés

The old settlement of Torre d’en Galmés dates back from the original inhabitants of the island, the Talaiot. One of the oldest and most important prehistoric cities of the island and the Balearic Islands, in general. According to some papers, around 900 people lived here between 1300 BC and Roman times.

The Talayotic village is located on a hill with beautiful views over the south coast of the island. Thanks to its position, historians think it was a strategic city that exerted great influence on the island. It features beautiful monuments, religious buildings and an interpretation center that displays virtual reconstructions of the village.

  • Cova d’en Xoroi

If you wonder what to do in Menorca, perhaps this is going to be the highlight of your visit. The Cova d’en Xoroi is a series of caves located in an impressive cliff by the sea. Spectacular during the day, magical in the afternoon and festive during the night.

There are several terraces and viewpoints in the caves which are a guarantee for a great time.

  • Cala and Porter

Close to the caves, you will find this beautiful cove of white sand among the rocks surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation. Cala en Porter has everything you need: showers, toilets, lifeguard, first aid, parking places and restaurants where you can try delicious Mediterranean cuisine.

Due to its location between the rocks, it’s protected against the waves therefore swimming is a very nice experience. Whichever beach you choose, don’t forget to bring your snorkel! ?

In the evening

  • Binibequer

This white village was originally a fishing village, now it is one of the most touristy places on the island. The narrow alleys of white houses form a maze where everyone can get lost in.

This village is definitely worth a visit. If you like photography, don’t forget to bring your camera. This white village has many alleys and corners that are very ‘’instagrammable’’.

Day 3️⃣

In the morning

  • Fortaleza de la Mola (Isabel II).

A beautiful fortress from the 19th century situated in a remote area. Its location is in a special protected bird area. It is one of the largest European forts built in the 19th century, on the La Mola peninsula which is also the easternmost point of Spain. Moreover, it has great views over the port of Mahon and the coastline of the island. This undoubtedly should go on your list of what to do in Menorca. 

The old construction with the gate is a great place for taking photos.

  • Mahon and the port.

The island’s capital has a fortress that guards the harbor, which dates from the time of English rule. This English rule influence can still be seen on the entire island, reflected in the many forts and military enclaves. It is the most easterly port of Spain and had great strategic importance in the past. It is also the largest natural harbor in the world. In addition, it’s very picturesque and charming. 

Before you leave the city, you must take a walk on the Portal de San Roc, or the Portal de Arriba or the en Servare, one of the last remains of the old city wall that was built in the Middle Ages. You will thank us later, this is probably one of the top activity of what to do in Menorca.

Mahon harbor

Stay in the capital of the island, Mahon.

  • Natural Park de s’Albufera des Grau.

Leave the city and drive by car to the Parque Natural de S’Albufera des Grau, a biosphere reserve with various zones. Hills, ravines, mountain streams, you will find everything here. There are 3 different routes to walk that will take you around an hour. You shouldn’t miss a visit to the lagoon where you will find various aquatic plants, birds and even turtles. This is the perfect spot for nature lovers. Take a look at the underwater world. ? ?

  • Faro de Favaritx.

The Faro of Favaritx is located in the northeast direction of the nature park. Thanks to its position is one of the most visited lighthouses in Menorca. This place is distinguished by the dark color of the rocks and the scarce vegetation.

It’s a very unique place, and one of the best places on the island to watch the magical sunset. What a beautiful end to your day in Menorca. ?
